Introduction
ABBA’s “Dream World” might not be a song you instantly recognize, but it holds a fascinating story within ABBA’s vast discography. Composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus in September 1978, “Dream World” was originally intended for a place on their iconic album, Voulez-Vous.
However, during the songwriting process, both Benny and Björn decided the song wasn’t quite the right fit for the album. While the exact reasons remain unclear, “Dream World” was ultimately scrapped. Interestingly, parts of the song found new life. Listeners familiar with ABBA’s hit, “Does Your Mother Know,” might recognize a connection. “Dream World” served as a springboard for “Does Your Mother Know,” with some of its melody and lyrical inspiration woven into the later song.
Despite not making the Voulez-Vous cut, “Dream World” wasn’t completely lost. Years later, in 1992, engineer Michael B. Tretow stumbled upon the recording while working on the compilation album, “ABBA Gold.” This reignited interest in the unreleased track. Finally, in 1994, “Dream World” was officially released as part of the “Thank You for the Music” box set, much to the delight of dedicated ABBA fans.
“Dream World” offers a unique chance to experience a different side of ABBA. Though not originally intended for the public eye, the song provides a glimpse into the band’s creative process and the evolution of some of their most well-known hits. As you listen, pay close attention to the melody and lyrics – you might just hear hints of what would become “Does Your Mother Know.”
