“Today I Started Loving You Again” is a poignant country ballad co-written by Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens in 1968. Initially released as the B-side to Haggard’s chart-topping single “The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde,” the song did not achieve immediate commercial success, failing to chart on its own. Despite this, it has since become one of Haggard’s most enduring and beloved compositions, frequently covered by various artists across genres.

The inspiration for the song reportedly struck Haggard spontaneously. According to American Songwriter, Haggard’s then-wife and co-writer, Bonnie Owens, recalled that he began composing the song while she was out briefly, and upon her return, he had nearly completed it. Owens, who often assisted Haggard by transcribing his lyrics, noted his remarkable ability to produce profound words effortlessly.

Although “Today I Started Loving You Again” was not a hit for Haggard upon its initial release, its emotive lyrics and melody resonated with many artists, leading to numerous cover versions that brought the song greater recognition. Notably, Al Martino’s 1969 rendition reached number 19 on the U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and Sammi Smith’s 1975 version peaked at number 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
