“I Wouldn’t Put It Past Me” is a track from Dwight Yoakam’s ninth studio album, A Long Way Home, released on June 9, 1998. This album marked a return to Yoakam’s more traditional country roots, following his previous explorations into diverse musical styles.

Yoakam penned all thirteen songs on A Long Way Home, including “I Wouldn’t Put It Past Me,” during the filming of The Newton Boys in Austin, Texas. He found that the stationary nature of writing, as opposed to the interruptions of touring, allowed him to ponder and think outside himself, leading to some of his best material.

Musically, “I Wouldn’t Put It Past Me” showcases Yoakam’s influences, particularly the vocal mannerisms of his hero, Buck Owens. The song reflects a bright and vibrant atmosphere, characteristic of the album’s overall sound.

In 2016, Yoakam revisited “I Wouldn’t Put It Past Me” on his bluegrass album, Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars…, reimagining the song in a bluegrass style. This reinterpretation highlighted Yoakam’s versatility and deep-rooted connection to bluegrass music, reflecting his Kentucky heritage. “I Wouldn’t Put It Past Me” exemplifies Yoakam’s ability to blend traditional country elements with his unique style, creating music that resonates with authenticity and innovation.
