ABBA’s “Hovas Vittne” isn’t your typical chart-topping pop song. It’s a hidden gem, a one-of-a-kind recording created not for the masses, but for a very special occasion: the 50th birthday of Stig Anderson, ABBA’s longtime manager and lyricist.

Born in the small Swedish town of Hova, Stig Anderson was a crucial figure in ABBA’s success. He recognized their talent early on and became their champion, crafting their image and co-writing many of their hits.

In 1981, to celebrate Stig’s golden birthday, ABBA decided on a unique gift. Benny and Björn Andersson, the songwriting duo behind ABBA, composed the music for “Hovas Vittne” (“Hova’s Witness”). The playful title is a clever wordplay on “Jehovah’s Witness,” referencing Stig’s hometown. The lyrics, penned collaboratively by Agnetha Fältskog, Frida Lyngstad, Benny, Björn, sound engineer Michael B. Tretow, and designer Rune Söderqvist, became a tongue-in-cheek ode to Stig’s work ethic and larger-than-life personality.

“Hovas Vittne” is a fast-paced, upbeat song brimming with affection. The lyrics paint a picture of Stig’s journey, from his humble beginnings to his success in the music industry. They playfully poke fun at his busy schedule, jet-setting lifestyle, and dedication to his work – even referencing his habit of vacuuming while on the phone!

Only 200 copies of “Hovas Vittne” were ever pressed on red vinyl, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after ABBA collectibles. While not a commercial release, the song remains a cherished testament to the bond between ABBA and the man who helped propel them to international stardom. It’s a lighthearted and affectionate tribute, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by ABBA fans and music lovers alike.
