ABBA’s “I Am An A” isn’t your typical chart-topping pop song. This quirky, unreleased track offers a glimpse into the personalities of the band itself, making it a favorite among die-hard ABBA fans.

Composed during their 1977 European and Australian tour, “I Am An A” was a playful introduction for their live shows. Each member takes a turn singing a short verse, introducing themselves with a corresponding letter (A for Agnetha and Frida, B for Björn and Benny) and highlighting their quirks and personalities. Agnetha playfully claims to be the star, while Björn admits to his dislike for shaving and his less-than-stellar driving skills. The lyrics even hint at a friendly rivalry between the girls (A) and the boys (B).

Despite its lighthearted nature, “I Am An A” is significant for another reason. The song’s melody for the chorus was later reworked and became “I Know Him So Well,” a powerful ballad featured in the musical Chess, written by Benny and Björn after ABBA disbanded.

While “I Am An A” never received an official release, it has gained a cult following among fans. Several live recordings from the 1977 tour circulate online, capturing the song’s infectious energy and the playful camaraderie between the band members.
